We talk a lot about net‑zero targets and long-term strategies. But what if real change starts with something as small as a cup on your desk?

Sustainability at work can feel overwhelming. Net-zero targets, policies, long-term strategies. It’s easy to think meaningful change has to be huge.
But sometimes it starts with something much simpler.
One thing I’ve learned is that sustainable habits often fail not because people don’t care, but because they’re inconvenient. If the sustainable option is harder, busy people default to what’s easier.
Recently, I organised an initiative back in 2025 to provide every employee at 2i with a reusable stainless steel coffee mug. On paper, it was a small action but the impact went far beyond the mugs themselves.
It sparked conversations.
It made sustainable choices easier.
It showed that practical steps matter.
By giving everyone the tools directly, we made choosing sustainability easier. Sometimes all it takes is a helping hand.
It also sent a visible signal: sustainability isn’t just a statement. It’s something we’re willing to act on.
Employee-led initiatives can be incredibly powerful. They feel authentic, practical, and rooted in everyday experience rather than top-down mandates. And sustainability doesn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful. Progress comes from many small improvements adopted consistently over time.
I am incredibly proud to work for an organisation that embraces sustainability like it's second nature (no pun intended!)

For organisations looking to encourage sustainable behaviour, a few things I would suggest:
- Make the sustainable option the easy option
- Provide practical tools, not just guidance
- Encourage ideas from employees
- Focus on consistent habits, not one-off campaigns
This experience reinforced something simple but important:
Culture shifts through visible action, not just intention.
Small changes, multiplied across a whole organisation, can create real impact.
